Building up on the previous summary of the successes in the Baltic edtech region, we continue with our “Summary 2021” series by sharing the accomplishments of the edtech companies in the Nordic region. Norway

Hypatia Learning

Hypatia Learning partnered up together with the College of Volstfold, the College of Volda and Halden Municipality to work on project “Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Assessment for Learning (AfL) to Improve Learning and Teaching in 21st Century (AI4AfL)” supported by the money from the Research Council.

Kahoot!

Kahoot! launched a new app for kids “Kahoot! Kids” and Kahoot!+ for higher education students, leading to record level activity this year. Additionally, Kahoot! partnered up with Minecraft: Education Edition to bring coding challenges to learners of all skill levels.

Samm Talk

SammTalk organised another year of their pen pal project for students aged 14-19 in public and private schools in Europe, the UK, and Istanbul.

SignLab

SignLab was awarded The Zero Project Award 2021 for transforming the world of learning and thinking about sign language.

We Are Human

We Are Human joined forces with Slush and published a whitepaper “Entrepreneurship Redefined” to drive future success via diverse teams, innovation through collaboration, and purpose-driven teams.

Sweden

Beetroot Academy

Beetroot Academy received a finalist prize of the Partnership for Sustainability Award 2021 by UN Global Compact for the implementation of the WINGS project.

imagiLabs

imagiLabs’ imagiCharm and the imagi on TV, in an Apple Event and in magazines such as Forbes, TechCrunch, BuzzFeed, and WIRED.

Loops Eucation

Loops Education created the opportunity to add content from their Teams app directly to Assignments and also launched their app for both Android and iOS.

Sana Labs

Sana Labs partnered up with AI Sweden to deliver a course on information-driven healthcare and published 10 episodes of their podcast Frontiers of Learning in 2021.

 

Iceland

Kara Connect

99Math users solve 1 million math problems per day and raised a million dollars to provide more US schools with a free 99Math solution. And finally, they were listed as one of the top 10 education startups in the European region.

Mussila

Mussila, joined the Supercharge Venture Cohort 3.0 as well became a part of Skolon in Norway.

Denmark

Hopspots

Hopspots became a part of a new Swedish initiative called “Science Gym”,  a tent full of technologies with focus on movement. Hopspots also won two Lotus Awards – for innovation and culture.

Peaqs

Peaqs took home a silver medal at the Reimagine Education Awards & Conference, a global edtech competition. Additionally, Peaqs made it to the TOP 10 Nordic & Baltic GESA semifinalists and pitched their solution to the jury at xEdu.

Finland

Claned

Claned developed the Nordic Social Entrepreneurship 3.0 program in partnership with EntreCom, Sociale Entreprenører i Danmark, Oslo International Hub, Claned in Finland, and Folkuniversitetet in Sweden and collaborated with Slush on the white-paper “Entrepreneurship Redefined”.

Code School Finland

Code School Finland launched their schools in Mexico and Malaysia.

Education Alliance Finland

Education Alliance Finland created a new certificate to support equality, and started collaboration with the Austrian Government in EdTech quality control.

Educraftor

Educraftor launched their Academy focusing on how to grow innovation culture.

Eduten

Eduten won the 2021 EdTech x Europe Award for Impact, and had a successful year with its podcast “Finnish Education”.

Elias Robot

Elias Robot partnered with STEAM Alliance, and shares research details on how primary education students worked with their app.

Freeed

Freeed started a collaboration with Atea Finland who is a Premium Partner for Apple Education, and they launched their Freeed app in App Store and Google Play.

GraphoGame

GraphoGame won the Nordic & Baltic Global EdTech Startups Awards semifinal, and were awarded the “Best Early Years Resource” at GESS Education Awards. GraphoGame was announced to be given free of charge to schools in Jamaica.

Kide Science

Kide Science launched a new teacher platform in 2021. Together with being recognised as one of the 10 European startups shaking up the edtech sector, they won the Top Tier Impact Award in Media & Education. Finally, the CEO & co-founder Sari Hurme-Mehtälä was featured amongst the top 14 female founders in European EdTech.

Mightifier

Mightifier made it to the list of Top 100 companies in Finland and worked along CambriLearn to support social emotional development of students.

Moov Kids

Moov Kids’ activities and lesson plans are being used in Australia, after signing an agreement with HEI Schools.

New Nordic School

New Nordic School established a new education centre in Portugal in collaboration with Boundless Life, and launched their New Learning Platform in beta version.

Polar Partners

Polar Partners became a part of a consortium selected to build 75 new schools in Peru as a part of a special project the Proyecto Especial de Inversión Pública – Escuelas Bicentenario (PEIP-EB). The Polar School concept has been officially granted the Design from Finland mark.

School Day

School Day growed their active user base 100% in 2021. Their teachers were very excited about School Day’s freemium offering, and managed to get their first US districts on board.

Seppo

Seppo reached the 200k of Seppo games milestone in 2021, and partnered with Pearson to gamify their learning materials.

We Encourage

We Encourage won the Digital Service of the Year 2021 prize (Ohjelmisto ja e-businenss ry), and became one of the semifinalists on the stage at Slush. We Encourage also received additional funding to continue their Tanzania project.

What We Encourage learned in 2021?

It is important to focus. We made a decision to pivot and put all our efforts on AINO AI tool. It was worth it.

What is the best memory of 2021 for We Encourage?

Just keep on moving, even with baby steps. Hang on, even if you feel low and would like to quit. Keep on going!
